2518 engine clatter

I have a 2518 18hp kohler..160 hrs always serviced. When the engine heats up after an hour or so (mowing) the engine begins to make a severe "clattering" and I have to shut it down. It runs great, has full power, no smoke doesnt use any oil. Any input would be appreciated!! thanks

Are you using a 10w-30 engine oil since ALL Kohler command engines use hydraulic lifters. Straight weight oils can prevent the lifters from pumping up properly and cause all kinds of running problems. Kohler markets an excellent oil for their engines.
Has this engine do it since day one or did it start after an oil change?
